What's On My Nightstand | December 2011

It's December 28th and January is right around the corner. My reading has picked up over the holidays and I'm hoping that for at least a little while I can devour a couple of books. Here's what I currently have my nose in and what I'm hoping to read in the very near future.

While We're Far Apart by Lynn Austin was a Christmas gift. I've read a few of Austin's books before and I really liked them, so I was eager to pick this one up. I'm about 100 pages in and enjoying it. And I just love the cover of this one, too.

After hearing that The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien is being transformed into a movie, I knew I wanted to read this book. I haven't read any of The Lord of the Rings series, but I've watched all the movies again and again. I love Tolkien's style of writing. Some may find him too wordy, but every once in a while I get an urge to get lost in a real storytelling piece of fiction.

No Wonder They Call Him the Savior by Max Lucado is an interesting look at different aspects of Jesus' life and the people who surrounded him. I'm liking it, but I all of Lucado's works in my opinion are rather choppy. It's difficult for me to sit down and read several chapters as one chapter's topic is so different from the next. I have to spend a while thinking about the chapter I just read before I read another.

I'm also considering joining Carrie's L.M. Montgomery Reading Challenge in January. Last year I read Anne of Green Gables and I'm curious about the Emily series.
Thanks for stopping by. Feel free to share what's on your nightstand or point me in the direction of your own post. Happy New Year and Happy Reading!

  1. I want to read The Hobbit too, I haven't read any of the books. I'm also curious about Montgomery's Emily series, I have one more Anne book to read then might jump into Emily. Happy reading!

  2. As good as the LOTR movies are (I've watched them multiple times as well), the books are SO much better (as books usually are)! Very excited about The Hobbit movie as well, and will be reading the book as soon as my currently-reading pile goes down a bit. Have you seen the trailer yet??

Have you tried Wonderland Creek by Lynn Austin? It's the only one I've ever read by her, and it was excellent! Good enough to make me want to read more by her.

I enjoyed the Max Lucado one, but then again I usually enjoy his books; he's been a favorite for as long as I can remember.

  5. I haven't heard of this book yet from Max Lucado, the one called "No Wonder They Call Him the Savior". I would definitely like to read this one!

And if you decide to take the LMM challenge in January, I would recommend the Emily series, especially since you are curious. I actually enjoyed the 3 Emily books better than the whole Anne series! I think it's because Emily is a writer... and that makes all the difference. *wink*
