What's On My Nightstand | March 2011

What's On Your Nightstand

Here I am for another round of What's On Your Nightstand? a monthly post featuring books I have read since the last Nightstand post and books I hope to read before the next one rolls around. Visit 5 Minutes for Books to get all the details.

From my last Nightstand post I read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and Out of the Silent Planet.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was such a good book! I had a little bit of a hard time getting into it (mainly because I was reading a couple of other books and my attention was divided) but about a third of the way in it just caught me up and transported me to Guernsey. Guernsey is a real place, if you didn't know, and now I want to go there. Look up the book's website and you can see all of the exciting details. There is some language issues, but they are very sparse; it is still a good read!

I liked Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis too, but I don't think I'll venture further into The Space Trilogy, at least for now.

Not from my last post, I read Churched by Matthew Paul Turner, After the Leaves Fall by Nicole Baart, and The Silent Governess by Julie Klassen.

I didn't take time to review After the Leaves Fall, but it is seriously one of the best Christian fiction books I've read. I have not read any coming-to-Christ story so poignant or realistic as After the Leaves Fall, or seen an author tackle life stuff in such an appropriate way.

The Silent Governess was my first Julie Klassen read, and I know I'll be reading more from her. It was a little too much romance for my taste, but the writing and setting had me hooked.

What am I reading now? Well, I'm participating in Spring Into Reading 2011, so see my post about that. I'm currently reading Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, The Band that Played On by Steve Turner (a book about the eight musicians who went down with the Titanic). My Spring Into Reading post includes other selections that I plan on reading in the next three months.

Some more reading news is that about three weeks ago I purchased a Kindle. I have enjoyed it so much already, and I haven't even had to pay for a book yet! There are so many free books that piqued my interest, and pretty much any classic (like Les Miserables) is free. Anyway, I'm really glad that I got it, and am enjoying it immensely.

I can't believe it is already March, and I feel like my reading is just now getting into full swing, though I'm trying to give time to it and school. I'm so looking forward to more relaxing summer days to soak up the sun and read more!

Happy Reading!

  2. I hear you when you say that you feel your reading is just getting underway! So glad you made it to Guernsey. I thought that was book was AWESOME!

Lewis' Space Trilogy isn't my favorite. Intriguing, but not as compelling and welcoming as Narnia, in my humble opinion.

    Enjoy your reading month!

  4. I was a huge fan of Guernsey, also, and I wondered what their tourism income was like after the huge success of the book!

  5. Way to go with Les Mis. I've had that sitting on my bookshelf forever, pining to read it--but the tyranny of the urgent (books to be returned to the library after just six weeks) and the terror of the tome (the immense length of Les Mis) keep me from getting started.

We definitely are agreed on the Guernsey front!

  6. @bekahcubed I know! The Size of Les Miserables is rather frightening to me, but I just told myself that I will finish it, no matter how long it takes! It is crazy long, divided into individual parts and books and chapters. At least the writing is really good and the story is interesting, or I might not make it.

  8. I have a Kindle too, and it is AWESOME! I actually got it free by using a ton of Swagbucks gift cards. Since then, I've downloaded about 400 ebooks to read--ALL of them free. Thus, my Kindle reading experience comes to me, quite simply stated... FREE.

If you need any other ebooks yourself, I actually just recently posted a list of wonderful free ebook websites where I downloaded most of my own. You might like it!
