Spring Reading Thing 2012 \\ The Start

March 20th - June 20th

Spring Reading Thing 2012 has arrived! Katrina at Callapidder Days is hosting once again with her challenge to make a few reading goals this Spring. It is a very low pressure challenge, as I can heartily attest to. If you're interested, click the button above, then add your link.

Five books. That's my goal. Since Spring covers about three months, I think I can manage it. I'll probably end up with more than five since I'm not counting the books for my English class in this list, but I thought I'd feel better if I set the bar a bit lower than usual. Some of these books I've already started, so I'm already a step ahead.

What can I say about The Pilgrim's Progress? It's a classic!

I've been meaning to get around to One Thousand Gifts for a long while. I'm going into it a bit wary; books with a lot of hype surrounding them make me suspicious.

On the mention of hype... I've had Mockingjay on hold at my library for the past few weeks and it finally came it. It's pretty popular, apparently (as if I hadn't noticed). My sis read this before me and I'm just upset that she knows how it ends before I do.

I like a memoir every now and then. The Secret Life of a Fool: One Man's Raw Journey From Shame to Grace looks intriguing.

I'm nervous about reading this book, because perfection is my enemy and letting go of it is a little difficult and unnerving for me. Letting Go of Perfect: Women, Expectations, and Authenticity will definitely be an interesting read for me.

Looking at the covers of these books excites me! I'm excited to dive into spring! (Though so far the whole allergies thing hasn't been kind to me.) I'm coming off a high after spring break, too, so I'll let you know how I'm doing in a few weeks when I'm neck deep in assignments.

Spring is here. It's the time to stand in the middle of a grassy field speckled with wildflowers, spread arms wide, and breathe deeply. Happy reading this Spring!

Titles crossed out have been completed. :)

  2. I'm seeing that Secret Life of a Fool on quite a few lists. Think I'll have to mark that one down. Happy spring reading!

  3. Looks like a good list of books. I was never interested in The Hunger Games books, but the movie looks good.

    Have a great spring!

    1. I'm going to see the movie today (yay!) and am wondering how it compares to the book. I read the first book a year or so ago, so I'm a little fuzzy on some of it. I'm actually wondering if the movie will be better. I'm not one who considers the books to be "literary phenomenons," as I've heard them called. It's the story that is drawing people to them, I think, not the writing. So a movie to me wouldn't take much away from the book (unlike, say, other books to movies like Anne of Green Gables or The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader where the writing itself was so rich that a movie couldn't capture that spark). Okay, I'll stop now!

  4. I'm very interested in One Thousand Gifts. I haven't heard of it until today. I think I'll add it to my TBR list. Happy Reading! :)

  5. Ha! I SO get what you mean by currently popular books making you suspicious. Right now, it's You're Already Amazing by Holley Gerth that's doing it for me. And it has gotten a lot of hype amongst leading Christian women bloggers where everyone is telling each other they're already amazing. lol. Definitely thought it wouldn't live up to any good thing, that it would be just another fluffy self-esteem book for women, but so far, the little I've read, if it's going to keep up with that throughout the book, I'll have to grudgingly admit it's not half-bad. :)

That one, One Thousand Gifts, has had me curious for a while. I had it signed out from our library, but then I never got around to reading it; maybe I'll have time for the audiobook? There's actually a companion gift book out now, did you know? Called 'Selections from One Thousand Gifts: Finding Joy In What Really Matters'. Seems gorgeous.

Also Pilgrim's Progress. I've wanting to read that now for ages and ages. I found an old beat-up copy in a Value Village last year and since then I've taken in off my shelf in hoped of reading, and putting it back when I couldn't get to it...and taking it out again, and putting it back again.
I'm planning on starting a weekly, or something, feature on my blog where I go through it chapter at a time, kind of book club style only it's not going to be a book club. Hoping that way I'll read through it and be able to analyze it and share my thoughts on it in the meantime.

  6. I haven't heard of You're Already Amazing. Maybe I'll look it up.

I have read a few articles published in World Magazine by Voskamp that really were profound to me. I can already tell her writing is what is going to really draw me into the book. And I recently watched, I guess it was a book trailer of One Thousand Gifts and listening to her soft voice reading was so nice. I'm pretty sure I'll like the book.

Ah...dear Pilgrim's Progress. I meant to read it through March but it hasn't happened. I would totally follow your weekly feature and might read along with you. I'm having a hard time consistently reading it.

  7. Hey! Just popping in to remind you of my Titanic posts! I have a few on my blog now and will continue posting more every day, for at least the next week. I hope to hear some of your thoughts about anything you may find interesting.

Good luck with your Spring reading challenge! I'm looking forward to some reviews on these individual books along the way, because I may want to add some to my own reading lists.

    Have a blessed Easter weekend!

  8. Hi Jennifer,
Thanks for commenting on my reading list. I'm new to this Spring Reading Thing but enjoying it so far. It's nice to be "reading with purpose," if you know what I mean.

How is One Thousand Gifts going? It's one of my all time favorities. I think I gave away about 25 copies after I read it. I also have a Facebook discussion page that is still current if you have any interest in participating in that. I love hearing other people's take on this book. I had the privilege of hearing Ann speak in person at a ladies' retreat in Charleston, SC, just a few weeks ago. That was really a wonderful experience.

I'm enjoying Bonhoeffer ... yes, it is a chunk of a book!

    1. I'm still just at the beginning of One Thousand Gifts. I got a little distracted by some other books, but I'll be back to it soon. I already really like Voskamp's writing.
